Welcome to our site!

Our aim is to contribute to debates over the growth of international business in East Asia, its motivations and its effects, from a macro level down to a highly micro organizational level. The industrialization and dramatic economic rise of Japan since the nineteenth century, of Korea over the past 50 years, and of China since 1978 is well known. In each case, international business connections have played a critical role in the economic and technological catch-up of local firms in these three countries - at various times through spillovers from foreign-owned subsidiaries (in Japan in the interwar years, and throughout the region more recently), international joint ventures (in China following the Chinese Economic Reform), subcontracting (in post-war Korea), and licensing agreements (in post-war Japan and Korea).

Please feel free to come along to our seminars if you are in the Newark area - they are open to all. You may also like to take a look at our working paper series if you live further afield.
